Twitter is not really the place to directly promote things, if your a blogger passionate about your blog and niche, it will come across anyway. People that get interested in you will check out and follow your blog. Twitter is more about networking and connecting with people.

Interesting post with good advice. While Twitter did get its start with this question of "what are you doing?" I really believe that that is a question better suited for Facebook status updates than Twitter. I think Twitter has really been moving past this use of updating about every detail of your daily life and is now becoming an invaluable business and information tool- largely because of its ability to grant custom, bite-sized feeds of links and information in real time. In fact, I really would like to see more "pushing" (though I think "pushing" has negative connotations and would rather call it "information offerings" or some more eloquent variation on that :P) by businesses and website owners. For instance, ideally all my favourite stores, restaurants and bloggers would be on Twitter tweeting about daily specials, special offers and new posts as well as answering questions, monitoring for complaints and interacting with customers/readers. Thus far, a lot of the bigger companies are getting onto Twitter, but I think there's still a lot of untapped potential for smaller, local level businesses too.

So let me get this straight... It's okay for you to push things on twitter, but it's not okay for everyone else to do it because then less people click your links? Give me a break.
