Dating in 140 Characters or Less

Twitter MeI was talking to a friend the other day who was telling me about this girl he met at a coffee shop.  She noticed that he had the same laptop as she did and sparked a conversation.  They talked for an hour before she had to go.

“Did you get her number?” I asked.

“No, but I got her Twitter.  That’s even better!” he replied.

Wow.  What a world we live in.

Is it really better to get attached to someone’s Twitter?  As he explained to me, it allowed him and her to get to know each other based upon what they were doing in their lives instead of the front that we put up on the phone.  I, of course, countered that the lives we lead online are often not the best indication of reality.

I didn’t make a difference.  He felt that she had just opened a door to her inner circle of friends, an intimate view of her world that only a select couple of hundred other people have.  Oh well.

I might as well go get a wedding gift now.

That’s crazy, but I’m going to side with him on this one. I think you can learn quite a bit about someone via Twitter. It’s a great way to build relationships without being a huge distraction or interruption since you have the ability to reply whenever you feel it’s necessary.

Wedding gift? I wouldn’t take it that far :) However, it’s an interesting concept to think about.

I too side with the guy, Facebooks & Twitters can be pretty useful at getting an insight into common grounds, a headstart if you like.

Hellz yes. I’ve stayed away from twitter so far, in part due to Penny Arcade’s commentary, but I’d far rather get an okcupid profile, or even an lj or myspace link than a telephone number. My theory is that it’s because I’m bad at small talk, I just have problems saying something when I’ve nothing to talk about.

From the woman’s point of view - it is probably much safer to give out profiles to strangers than to give out phone numbers. She can always block him later if she wants - where if someone has your phone number, you don’t have the same kind of security permissions.

I flirt with babes on Twitter all the time. I need to get one of those shirts with my Twitter name on it so hot babes on the street can start following me.
