To Succeed on Social Media, Post Like a Honey Badger

Honey Badger

“The honey badger has been referred to by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most fearless animal in all the animal kingdom. It really doesn’t give a $#!7.”

This quote from “Randall” in the famous honey badger video tells you all that you need to know about succeeding in social media. To get the audience, retain the fans, and get the likes/retweets/+1s/repins/subscibers/whatevers that drive your social media engagement, you have to be fearless. This applies to both personal accounts as well as business accounts.

All too often, we see clients and potential clients who are exceptionally conservative with what they post. Boring is boring. Bland is bland. If you aren’t willing to shake things up a bit and post things that are truly interesting and able to generate conversation, there’s really no reason to post other than as a basic presence tool (which is acceptable for some companies).

If you want or need to go beyond having a space filled on your marketing checklist, then applying boldness and controversy to your social media posts is the way to go. It’s not that you have to necessarily make people angry or take on a contrary position on things, but it’s possible to be bold and pick a side when posting.

Don’t be afraid of what people will say about your posts. Be afraid that they’ll say nothing. That’s when social media fails.

  1. Simply put, no risk no gain. If we are not creative enough to be fearless to try new thing on social media, as you said, it is boring! :)

  2. Anything Honey Badger gets my attention, JD. I think creativity requires risk-taking. I agree there are way too many “safety players”. I was just watching this great documentary about Marina Abramovic, the iconic legendary performance artist. Wow, there is someone who never played it safe. She always stayed true to the art. Fear drives many to stay boring. Here’s to the risk-takers! Cheers to you, great post!

  3. Most businesses today are using social media. If you’re just posting a bunch of the same you aren’t going to get noticed. You need to be mindful of your online reputation, but it’s OK to do things a little differently in order to capture attention.

  4. “The honey badger has been referred to by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most fearless animal in all the animal kingdom.”

So, I open a Guinness and I post like a honey badger ;)

  5. I couldn’t agree more! Although it should not mean you should post anything that comes in mind, you should post everything that feels good. Post like a honey badger, yeah!

  6. oh wao is it really fearful ? then a great idea about this to we have to be fearful in socil media ;)

  7. I think its worth mentioning that if you have a significant following you are always going to oppose someone else’s viewpoint. The key is to show it in such a way that you invite a healthy debate.

  8. Honey badgers are my new favourite kick arse animal, not to sure about the method for engaging though will have to sleep before I can work it out.

  9. Everything is good. Social Media is so important for SEO,
