Thankfully, My Powerpoint Broke in the Middle of My Social Media Presentation

JD Rucker Speaking

Do you see the darkness in the background? That’s a presentation being done without the accompanying Powerpoint. Sixteen minutes into an hour-long presentation, the power on my computer ran out.

I had forgotten my power source at home so an hour before my presentation, I was in Staples buying a new one. It was supposedly compatible and seemed to fit the computer, so I ran with it. We were in a rush and as I prepared to start I didn’t check to make sure it was charging.

It wasn’t.

It was the best thing that could have happened. The remainder of the presentation after the initial awkwardness of standing in front of an empty theater screen was better than it would have been had the presentation not failed. The reason is simple. I was forced to go back to what I knew without assistance of a visual – analyzing individual business situations. Rather than go through the tips and tricks that business owners could use for their social media, I interacted with the audience to find out their specific needs. The point, I believe, was made in a better way than had the presentation gone without a hitch.

Any business can use social media. Any.

Here’s the video. Be sure to give it a thumbs up, if only for the sheer fact that I had to go through 45 minutes without my presentation.

A Shockingly Great Video that Explains Reddit to the Novice

Reddit Wallpaper

One of the bad parts about being in social media professionally is that I often have to travel to conferences. For this reason, I missed the best novice explanation of Reddit that I’ve ever seen. It’s actually quite brilliant.

The front page of the internet has its strengths and its weaknesses. This video gives a relatively unbiased view, pointing to both sides. With astonishing numbers behind the site and a community that is arguably the most interactive of any community on the web, this video might be enough to make you stare into the abyss to see what stares back at you.

As the narrator describes it at the end, “You’ll wonder how you ever interneted without it.”

I’ve been on Reddit for several years now and I couldn’t imagine where I would be if I hadn’t used it until now.

Recording Blog Posts is a Way to Find a Different Audience

Mic

It’s not for everyone. Some people just don’t like to hear their voices played on audio or video. I know. I used to be one of them.

If you can get over that fear and if you want to get your YouTube channel some watches while helping to get your content seen and heard, it’s a quick and easy way to kill a couple of birds with a single stone. The concept is pretty simple. Write a blog post, then read it off while recording a video. Attach the video to the story and now you have an easy way for people to either read your blog post or watch it.

Perhaps more importantly, it takes the art of writing and allows you to get creative in the fastest growing medium. Remember, everything is going mobile. While it can be annoying trying to read a blog post on a smartphone, listening to it on YouTube is often much easier. If you get good at recording the audio from the posts and applying it to either a visual of yourself reading it, a slideshow, a scrolling transcript, or other images that are pertinent to the video itself, you can make for an alternative experience for your content.

Some people are readers. Others are listening. There’s even a few people that like to do both. I tend to listen to a video or podcast playing in the background while reading something else. Here’s an example:

The Viral Content Myth

Wikimotive Viral Shark

Are you looking to go viral today? Do you want the magic formula, the secret spell, that alchemical reaction that will transform your tired old content into a vibrant viral rocket, blasting into the social-sphere of your target audience and sending them over the moon with purchasing-joy? Well…too bad. Buck up buttercup, because contrary to what many of the affordable SEO companies out there are saying, there simply isn’t a viral shortcut.

(Sorry to disappoint you, but anyone who says otherwise is either a liar or an idiot. They can choose which, I’m generous that way.)

You’re Nobody ‘Till Somebody Ranks You

Wikimotive SEO Rapper

Here at Wikimotive, we love Business SEO. We work at it all day, poring over analytics data and tweaking this or that to stay in Google’s good graces. Honestly, it never gets old. Just between you and me, when we lay our heads down at night, we have beautiful dreams of Matt Cutts.

Still though, we’re not going to argue that it’s the most exciting subject in the world. It has more than its fair share of minutia and tedium. As you’ve probably experienced, when you explain it to an outsider their eyes tend to glaze over and a fine string of drool slides down their chin. The unfortunate thing is that this happens even when you’re explaining it to a decision-maker who NEEDS the info.

Subtle, Powerful Advertising with a Story: The Pantene Magic

Hair

It’s been 5 years since Pantene put out a magical commercial that transcended what most imagine a commercial should be. To this day, I still watch it from time to time just to get some inspiration. Yes, it’s a touching storyline, but more importantly from a marketing and advertising perspective the way that they set up the “money moment” at the end when you see the glowing air flowing in artificial wind was pure brilliance.

Five Social Media Tools to Grow Your Business

Technology has become a walking, talking part of our daily lives.  In fact, technology is so built into the decision-making of most people that it is nearly impossible to grow a company without utilizing social media tools.  A company has to be visible in order to be relevant, and these strange new systems like SEO writing and link building services, which can be difficult to understand, are also essential tools for the modern-day entrepreneur.

Of the many tools that are out there, here are the five that every businessperson should be using.

1.  Facebook

The fact is that everybody is there, and the Millennials especially are plugged into Facebook like you wouldn’t believe.  More and more, that’s where people go to find things, and so to be viable you at least need a company facebook page.  Once you have that, encourage your customers to like it; that’s probably the best way to drive referral business today.

2.  Video

Video is a great way to increase the visibility of your business.  The videos don’t have to be brilliant, they don’t have to be shot well, and they don’t really even need to be about anything.  Again, it’s mainly about creating presence.  But if while creating that presence you happen to come up with something that people respond to, you just might go viral.

3.  Link Building Services

Link building services embed quality links to your Website from other content around the Web.  To search engines, that appears as incidents in which other well-traveled sites are referring to your site.  That makes your site seem more important, and search engines pick it up.

4.  LinkedIn Endorsements

In important ways LinkedIn is still trying to define itself in the social media niche.  However, as Facebook’s extreme popularity begins to catch up with it, professionals are looking more and more to LinkedIn for professional networking.  That includes making endorsements and writing recommendations.  If you jump in and endorse people you know, you’ll get endorsements back.  A professional network can be crucial to growing a business.

5.  Targeted advertising

Online advertising is still struggling to define itself as a truly new genre – a feat the major markets for advertising need to accomplish to make online advertising truly effective.  But it does have the benefit of being inexpensive and, through social media sites, incredibly well targeted.

There are many other places to spend time and money online, and the fact is that a list written today, however true it is now, might be outdated in three or four months.  The social media space is constantly changing, but investing in that space, especially in link building services and other search engine optimization methods, is the best way to help your business grow.
