You have come up with a real good post. I have personally tried the last method that you have mentioned which is DIY. Yup, I have done it myself - but now a days, I don't find time in working with my sites. So I think I should be going with the first option. Anyways, this post will surely be helping newbies as well as experts equally.

Thanks for the great read. I would just like to point out that although it would be preferable for companies to maintain conversations in the social media sphere within the company, most of the time, this does not happen. It could be because of lack of time, manpower, etc. Would that then mean that the company can just forget about engaging their community through conversations? It shouldn't. Social media engagement, although not a primary requirement for a business to function, is also very beneficial. Thus, in cases where companies are not able to manage their own conversations, this is where outsourcing can come in. It is not the idea of outsourcing that would be an issue. Outsourcing to someone several miles away versus someone else with in your company is still not you. What is vital is exercising proper guidelines and maintaining effective communication to ensure that your social media engagement remains effective. For us (we are an outsourcing company: Infinit-O), the question is not whether you should outsource, but who should be your outsourcing partner. That's just my two cents on that. Kudos!

there is a fine line to walk with social media. outsourcing to the proper group is imperative to making social media actually work to benefit the company rather than cost the company

There are many ways to personalize your social media participation and still hire an outside person to help. This outside source can help with strategy, get you setup and started and give you tips along the way. An outside source can help with account management thus giving the "company" in question more time to jump on and be social.
There are many ways to combine the personal touch of social media and the assistance of an outside firm.

It could be considered a subset of #2, but it's not a bad idea to look at another option: contract with a solo social media consultant. If you work with a good one, you'll get close, personalized service, focused expertise, and consistency.

It is useful if you have lots of websites and you have no time to do for the campaigns but if not do it yourself is the best option. You can have your man for 300 dollars a month to do that for you just contact me.
