One Billion Users On Facebook Monthly

Facebook One BillionFacebook has hit another incredible milestone yesterday; the social network now has over a billion active monthly users. Did you read that right? That’s a BILLION with a B. Every single month. Marketing using Facebook can potentially reach more people than any other media outlet ever.

Zuckerberg kept it low key, simply publishing the following on his Facebook Newsroom:

“This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month. If you’re reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you. Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life. I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.”

With one billion users a month, can we finally ALL agree that Facebook is a marketing necessity? At this point, if you’re not on Facebook, it’s not because you don’t see the worth.

It’s because you’re lazy…and maybe a little afraid.

You’re lazy because it’s another thing to add to your plate. You’ve been safely ignoring it, telling yourself it wasn’t important enough to merit some of your precious time. That’s simply not true. If you don’t want to handle it, then hire someone to do it for you, but don’t tell yourself it’s not important. A billion monthly users say differently.

You’re scared, because we’re all afraid of the unknown. Facebook represents a brand new age in marketing–the social age–and for all of us who didn’t grow up with it, it’s going to take some getting used to. All I’m asking is that you give it a chance. Many (maybe most) of you already have, but I’m talking to the holdouts here. Don’t be intimidated by social marketing on sites like Facebook. You’ve faced incredible marketing challenges in your life and you have overcome them.

Don’t be left behind by the one your 12-year-old niece checks before breakfast.

  1. Although Facebook does connect one billion users on a monthly basis, I also believe that Facebook is less personable than other social media sites used for marketing. Yes there are more people on facebook than any other social media, but are they actively participating in discussion like Twitter users? It’s very easy to “like” a product or business on Facebook, but does that really mean they are buying into that product?

  2. Thanks for commenting on my post, Austin. I’m not sure I agree that you can get very personal in 140 characters or less, though I agree that Twitter is a must have in social media marketing.

  3. It takes time to market on Facebook correctly. If a business is going to set up a page they need to keep it active. An inactive Facebook page in some ways is worse than not having one at all.

  4. It is a double edge sword because with that many people you have to be willing to play ball but to play ball you really need to know what you are doing. With a billion people now using Facebook you have to be willing to really learn how to use the platform to leverage your voice.

  5. Some people are not on Facebook, doesn’t mean that they are afraid or lazy, etc. This is too judgmental.

    And even Facebook hits 1 billion active, doesn’t mean everyone in the world needs to go Facebook to do marketing.

    I connected with a Venture Capitalist on Linkedin and we started a project. So, tell me, what are the chances that I am able to do that on Facebook?

  6. Kent, you are missing the point, connecting with a VC is not marketing. Of course you would not use Facebook as a primary means to accomplish that. Though I wouldn’t discount the notion entirely.

    I would conclude that advertising Starbucks checkin specials on LinkedIn would equally be an inferior move to doing so on Facebook. We’re talking about using the channel from the stand point of marketing not business networking per se.
