I hear too often about how companies will get businesses out there and exposed on dozens, even hundreds of social media sites. In reality, there are only a handful that need to be focused upon. Social networks on a personal basis are geared around preference, so I would not presume to tell Bob or Sally that they shouldn’t be on Bebo or Blinklist.

For business, the choices can be narrowed down greatly.

Here’s a brief overview of the important ones right now that have valid business reasons for their use. This is not a comprehensive list, only a safe one. If you focus on these, you’ll be fine…

Social Networks

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Niche Community Sites

Social News

  • Reddit
  • Digg
  • StumbleUpon

Specific-Use Social Media Sites

  • YouTube
  • FourSquare
  • Quora

  • WordPress
  • Tumblr

That’s it. Are there others that are valid right now? Of course. Are there some on this list that may fade soon? Yes. Quora, for example, is facing challenges in leadership that may derail their momentum. WordPress is more complex than what some want to use, while Tumblr is not powerful enough for others.

In the end, it comes down to personal preference, needs, and time allowed. If your business only focuses on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and blogging, then you’ve got 95%+ of your social networking covered.
