Share buttons are a must on blogs and websites, anywhere you have content you truly need to ensure that you provide social share buttons to your readers or community; people love to discover and share a good find. However, knowing which social share buttons are worth adding to your site can prove difficult especially with the variety of social networks we have to choose from, therefore there is such thing as too much when it comes to share buttons.
Depending on your platform you may have to get the codes from individual sites to implement within your website which will certainly slow down how many you will add, with that said many sites are now hosted on a WordPress blog, even sites that don’t look like blogs due to its simple interface and various optional free themes. This is often where many find trouble when knowing which social share buttons are worth activating on your site since there are truly tons of plugins that offer every imaginable social network alive (even including some dead ones if not updated.)
Overcrowding your website or blog with share buttons can become overwhelming for your audience and a little intimidating for when they opt to share which could unfortunately have them opt out of sharing completely. Clearly this is not the end result you were looking for when initially adding the buttons to your site, you just didn’t want to miss any opportunity for the free word of mouth publicity by leaving a social button off of your site, which then in turn caused no shares at all.
Yes there are many social networks and even ones you have never heard of which many will come to find out when installing a plugin on WordPress. Just because you have access to enable the share buttons does not mean you should. The main buttons you need on your site are Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Buffer. If you have room then feel free to add a Tumblr and StumbleUpon button, but other than the mentioned you seriously do not need anymore.
Don’t fear not having a button, if people really want to share you will be surprised as to how inventive they will get, not to mention the many available Add-Ons for various browsers that help when wanting to share to social networks.
Just focus on your content and make sure that it is of good quality, make the content suit your readers, use infographics, images and videos to switch up the content and remember to always throw in some original writing too. That way you won’t have to worry so much about the buttons being available to share since your content will be share-worthy, people will find a way.
